TRINITY COUNSELING CENTER
Our Mission
For when we are harassed by poverty, saddened by bereavement, ill and in pain…let good people visit us—people who can not only rejoice with those that rejoice, but weep with those that weep, and who know how to give useful advice and how to win us to express our own feelings in conversation. —Augustine of Hippo (Ep. 130, ii, 4.)
The Trinity Counseling Center is a ministry of Trinity Presbyterian Church and exists to provide counseling that is biblically rooted, theologically rich, and clinically sound to both the members and attenders of Trinity Church, and to the Charlottesville community at large. The New Testament calls the people of God to care for one another in all areas of life. We are called to “bear one another’s burdens,” to love one another “with a brotherly love,” and to “fill up what is lacking in the suffering of Christ.” In short, we are called to be a community that loves and cares for each other as Jesus loved and cared for the world. We self-consciously identify with the local church as a particular “arm” of care, both for the church and for the larger community.
We believe that every person who walks through our doors is profoundly marked by dignity, having been made in the image of God, and also broken to the core because of the devastating effects of sin. Our goal is to work with our clients at exposing and honestly facing brokenness in their lives, in order to then expose and face the beauty that has been marred or covered. We are a group of fellow broken and struggling pilgrims, who have been gifted and equipped to serve in the particular calling of meeting people in the midst of their psychological and relational pain. Our hope is that the people we are privileged to work with will experience healing and new degrees of wholeness and freedom, with the ultimate goal of loving God, neighbor, and themselves more deeply.
Our Counseling and Clinical Orientation
The destiny of the world is determined less by the battles that are lost and won than by the stories that it loves and believes in. —Harold Goddard
At TCC we orient ourselves and our work around the story of Scripture, which the church has acted out from its very beginning to this present moment; namely, that all creation, including and especially human beings, were created by a good God with dignity and beauty. Yet all humanity, because of sin and rebellion, is no longer what it was meant to be. And this resultant brokenness is most poignantly displayed in the strained relationships we have with ourselves, with each other, and with our Creator. We believe that God is not only bringing redemption in the meta story of all of creation, but is also intimately concerned with and at work in the stories of each individual who walks through our doors. We therefore will walk with our clients through their stories, not as experts, but rather as competent “guides,” who have seen measures of redemption in our own lives and who long for faith, hope, and love to replace the shame, fear, and despair that so often rules in all of our hearts.
At the core of our clinical approach is a relational model that understands deep human connection as the vehicle for change to take place. Since interpersonal relationships are the areas in which brokenness is most experienced, they are also the places we believe God most effectively uses to heal and bind up. It is in the context of this relationship that the client’s story is explored, the roots and consequences of problems uncovered, and restoration takes place. The process of counseling can take many different forms and a variety of theories and techniques may be employed. Though we have been trained and influenced by various writers and thinkers, both inside and outside the Christian tradition, we are primarily and ultimately guided by the wisdom and truth found in the Scriptures.
