What comes to mind when you hear the word "leader"? How about
the word "servant"?
Jesus went out of his way to redefine leadership to a culture (like ours) that was confused about power and influence. The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve. (Matthew 20:28)
And Paul repeatedly describes himself in servant terms: For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. (2 Corinthians 4:5)
With this in mind, a few people gathered last year to think about what it would take to create a leadership culture at Trinity that will provide servant-leaders for the church and for our community. We wanted to know what we might do to identify and equip for leadership those in our midst with a heart and mind to have a kingdom impact in this fellowship and this community in which we live and work and play.
This Leadership Development Task Force met for eight months and talked with many of you, reading, thinking, praying and dreaming. Since then, we have taken some first steps. And we want a number of you to step into this conversation with us.
One of the better descriptions of leadership we ran across was this one from Dan Allender: "A leader is anyone who is moved to influence others to engage a problem or an opportunity for good... If we are being followed by someone who looks to us for wisdom, direction, perspective or a decision then we must embrace our calling and lead." (Leading with a Limp, p. 28)
And that means leadership is something for many of you to consider. Would you?
LEADERSHIP TRACK
The Leadership Track is a conversation about leadership. It's a series that
covers material and experiences we want many in our fellowship to have and
those things we would expect those involved in ministry, both in the church
and in the community, to have under their belts as they serve. It's a combination
of classes, seminars and mentoring relationships. Here's what it looks like:
Servant Leadership
A biblical perspective on leadership. Taught by Tony Giles and Terry Cook.
How People Change
You're invited to look at God's Word with us to see what he says about biblical
change. A 12-week course that is not a set of techniques or a formula to
apply. As we step into this together, we'll find that the gospel is the
heart of discipleship and is at the core of the lifelong process of transformation
into the image of Christ. Each week is a 90-minute study of biblical texts
and conversation based on homework. Led by Tony Giles and others. Required
workbook $25. To register, call Joyce Field at 977-3700.
