Adult Education

Sundays

Our Winter 2 term of classes for adults runs from January 15 to February 12. Classes meet from 10–11 am.

Psalm 119: Poetry, Law, Inspiration, and Love
Taught by Steve Garnecki, room 250
If someone told us to take the day off, get a massage, eat at our favorite restaurant, and spend the rest the day doing whatever we please, who would complain? We love doing things that make us happy. Yet we often find ourselves confronted with the question: will this really make me happy? When we ask this question of God’s Word, we often do it rhetorically, implying we know the answer is yes. But in the quiet recesses of our heart, we long to know if it is true. Will God’s Word really make me happy? Come and see how the Psalmist answers.

Missional Living in Our Neighborhoods
Taught by Todd Johnson and Wade Bradshaw, room 251
The word “missional” has become a buzzword in Christian circles, but what does it mean, and how might it affect our lives and where we live? We all long for our neighbors to encounter Jesus but how might we communicate God’s story to them in a compassionate and genuine way? This class is designed to begin our conversation together and will be discussion oriented, helping us all grow at living as God’s instruments of change in our neighborhoods.

Toward a Theology of Sport & Fitness: A Holistic View of God’s Image
Taught by Kelly Scott, room 202
Are you an athlete, coach, teacher, sports fan, exerciser, or parent of an aspiring athlete? Few, if any, of us are unaffected by the place of sports and fitness in our culture, yet it seems that Christian thought on the subject has been supremely lacking. What is the value of sport and fitness in the kingdom of God? How are we to be faithful in the realm of sport and fitness? We will explore various “Christian” paradigms on the subject, discuss related and
often difficult questions, and pursue a God-glorifying theology of sport and fitness. The very common nature of the topic will help even the most unathletic participants consider how God’s kingdom is tangible in our daily activities.

The Miracles of Jesus
Taught by Bob Newman, room 203
A survey of a number of Jesus’ miracles, looking at the supernatural power they displayed, the reactions they generated, and their significance, especially as regards Jesus’ person and work. We will consider several miracles each under the headings “Miracles over the Natural Realm,” “Miracles over the Human Realm,” and “Miracles over the Spiritual Realm.” We hope to discuss a dozen or so miracles in some detail, including the miraculous catch, the coin in the fish’s mouth, healing a nobleman’s son, cleansing a leper, raising Lazarus, the Gadarene demoniacs, and the Syro-Phoenician’s daughter.
