Adult Education

Sundays

Our spring term of classes for adults runs from February 19–April 29. Classes meet from 10–11 am.

Introduction to Trinity
Taught by various pastors and staff, room 202
This class introduces Trinity to those who want to know more about our church, especially those considering membership. You’ll get an overview of the beliefs and life of Trinity Presbyterian Church and prepare for membership in Trinity Church (the class is required for membership), as well as getting an introduction to the basics of the Christian Gospel and the biblical functioning of the Church as the Body of Christ.

Why Business Matters to God
Taught by Wade Bradshaw, Worship Alcove
Kevin Van Duzer, dean of the business school of Seattle Pacific University, has written a great book on how Christian faith should influence the practice of business. In our moment, when so many are angry or confused or defensive about the place of business in our society, this is a topic of interest to many who might not consider themselves “in business.” We’ll go through this very readable book and then have the opportunity to speak with Dr. Van Duzer on Sunday, April 1. Learning to do our business in a way that is good for ourselves and our neighbors is something that perhaps previous generations in the Church could leave to the wider culture to decide, but today the will of God needs to contribute to the public discussion. Van Duzer is biblically faithful, very practical, and without a political agenda.

Discipleship: Biblical Principles for Young Believers
Taught by Ken Elzinga and Lee Coppock, room 250
So far as we know, Jesus never said, “Go into the world and make converts.” He did say, “Go into the world and make disciples.” Lee Coppock and Ken Elzinga, both professors at UVA, will teach this class based on their experiences discipling young men. Topics covered will range from financial stewardship to setting priorities to evangelism to prayer to sexuality to basic questions about life and death. The class will function at two levels: as a blueprint for older Christians who want to be involved in discipling others and as content for younger Christians who have never been discipled. This class is open to men and women of college age and older.

Women in Scripture, Women in Calling
Facilitated by Mary Kathryn Calhoun, room 251
If it is true that “the story of any one of us is in some measure the story of us all,” then opened up to us is a world full of stories—not just our own but of humanity throughout the ages. Come see the relational interplay between God and women in the Scriptures and what unexpected, beautiful things He did for them. By entering into biblical narratives men and women can learn more of how to live today with increasing faith, hope, and love. Taught by Susan Cunningham February 19–March 18.
From March 25–April 29, women from our church will share their own stories of discerning God’s call in their lives. Men and women are encouraged to join us as we hear more about how God is working in and through women in our church.

The Passion of Jesus
Taught by Jim Anderson, room 203
Each of the four gospels tells us what happened in the last week of Jesus’ life. Having four witnesses provides the church a rich, full account of the Passion of Jesus and its meaning for Christians and the world. Our class will study the Last Week as presented in each gospel separately, and then bring these four streams together for the last two sessions.
