Mental Health: God and Mental Illness

Taught by Justin Smith

The field of medicine treated by psychiatrists includes disorders of affect, behavior, and cognition (the ABCs), broadly termed “mental illness.” As these domains are core to human experience, communal living, and meaning making, in the past they have largely been the domain of faith communities. One concern among Christians and people of other faith communities is that secular psychiatric treatment with mood-brightening or antipsychotic medication or therapy will estrange us from life as it really is. The goal of this series is to develop a framework by which to understand the brain and mental illness that resonates with a Scriptural view of how God has made us.
