On the Fruit of the Spirit and Christian Virtue

Taught by Wes Zell

This class has two components. First, it examines the apostle Paul’s discussion of the fruit of the Spirit by situating it within the larger Scriptural story about union with Christ, fruit-bearing, and spiritual maturity. We try to read the fruit of the Spirit contextually in order to better understand how Galatians 5 connects to the rest of Galatians, as well as to the Hebrew prophets and the death and resurrection of Jesus. Second, we consider the nature of Christian virtue as it relates to what we’ve learned regarding the fruit of the spirit. How should Christians understand virtue? And how can Christian virtue be cultivated and preserved?
